I watched her place magic seals around the house, starting off with the bedroom first. Using nothing more than actual “magic markers,” better known as Arcane pens, I watched Juliana from the realm of limbo in her short blue pajama shorts and her white T-shirt, concentrate on drawing on the walls throughout her home. Though she couldn’t see me, I was standing near reaching distance behind her. That was the worst part about being a spirit.
I could not stay in the human realm long without draining her mana over time in the process, and I could not be away from her too long without gaining a sense of heartbreak. What we had in the previous life...back when I was alive...was fenced between us by the laws of the spirit world and her world. I died years ago...and it was supposed to be simple as that. But Juliana found a way to bring me back.
Learning of her mystical powers, Juliana discovered that she was a Summoner, a celestial being that could manifest mana within her, in order to cast magic, mostly specializing in summoning mystical creatures or spirits. Though Summoners were only allowed to call forth one spiritual being, whether it was a creature or pure spirit. Afterward, a Summoner’s magic and life force, is linked to their summon. Juliana wasted her summon on me.
Things haven’t been the same since I’ve been back. As I said, I can only maintain to cross over in the world of the living for three hours at a time before Juliana begins to feel fatigue. Though I must say it is a massive improvement over the years, with the first year being a mere three minutes that she could keep me in the world of the living before her mana would begin to drain extremely low. I hated seeing her in such a weakened state.
She made her way into the living room and I decided to make my presence known. Solidifying my form, I spoke.
“Have you eaten?”
She turned around to take a quick glance at me, acknowledging me with a smirk. She seemed so concentrated. Yet, I could still feel she was happy to see me.
She started right away on the living room walls, starting off with the walls closest to the living room door.
“You should stay hidden. Noah will pick up on your essence if you are out of the spirit world too long.” She completely ignored my question, which knowing her, the answer was no.
“I don’t care,” I told her, touching her wrist for the first time in hours.
I cuffed her wrist into my hand, holding her entire body from behind. She stopped what she was doing, accepting my embrace. I felt warm all over again.
Nothing was said for seconds, time that was well deserved between the two of us. Though she broke that silence, slipping away from my embrace and turning to face me right after.
“Well I do care,” She lightly snapped. “I can’t allow anything to happen to you. Not again.”
“And I can’t protect you if I am always hidden.”
I took a step towards her but she took the same amount of steps away from me. “Juliana, you don’t understand. These guys are desperate regardless. If they cannot obtain me, they will kill you in the process, just to draw me out.”
“I’ll figure things out myself,” Juliana replied.
“Juliana, you can’t-”
“I’m sorry Kay.”
She cut my words off, waving her free hand as a magical green essence glowed around her hand. Before I knew it, I was back in spirit form. Juliana was still looking in my direction, though it was as if she was looking through me once again.
“I can’t lose you again my love. Please, try and understand.”
Her words made their way into the spirit realm. A tear left my right eye as I watched her walk past me, into the kitchen. She added to her busy scheduled night with washing the dishes.
